S.E. Hinton’s story “The Outsiders” takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in a poor area. The conflict of the story is that the Socs are after the Greasers because Johnny (Greaser) killed Bob (Soc) in self/defense so, the Socs want to get revenge for what Johnny did. One lesson the story suggests is that you should always look out and stick with your family throughout any situation.
From the very beginning, the description and details in the story show how the tension between the two gangs start to develop. The first event that takes place is the Socs beat up Ponyboy. The next night, The boys go out to a movie and meet Cherry Valance (Soc). Both Cherry and Ponyboy discuss the difference between the two gangs. Later on in the beginning of the story tension begins to grow intense between the two gangs after Johnny gets attacked by the (Socs) like Ponyboy did. After a while, Sodapop and Darry get into it and Ponyboy begs for the guys to stop fighting. During that moment Ponyboy and Darry then get into it because Ponyboy believes that Sodapop did nothing wrong and doesn’t deserve to get yelled at. Darry’s anger level rises. Darry then slaps Ponyboy across the face.
Ponyboy had never been hit before. He was so shocked that he had then stormed out of the house and grabbing Johnny to run somewhere, the park.
As the boys get to the park, the Socs pop up and start to attack Ponyboy and Johnny.
The tone at the beginning of the story is ‘wondering’ because while Ponyboy and Johnny were being attacked, I wondered throughout the whole process what would happen next. For example, “is someone going to die?” “will anyone get hurt?” and also “what will the results be after this?”
The theme I came up with relates to the beginning because you never know what event will take place or when it will occur. So therefore, you should stick with your friends and family because it’s important to keep everyone safe
By the middle of the story when Johnny and Ponyboy get jumped at the park, Johnny kills bob (Soc) in self/defense. Johnny and Ponyboy both were shocked about this, they didn’t know what to do. So.. They decide to run away, but before doing that, the boys go to Dally’s house to talk to him. They want to try and flee to Windrixville. While the boys are up surviving in Windrixville, they visit a Chruch that was drowning with flames. Both of the boys rush into the church looking for people or children that needed help. As the boys are helping the children, Johnny gets badly injured and Ponyboy gets knocked out.
As Johnny lays In the hospital, between the Socs and the Greasers, there is a deciding rumble.
During the time when Ponyboy and Johnny were in Windrixville, I found a hyperbole “I was dying for a Pepsi.” That shows how thirsty Ponyboy was at the time.
The theme I came up relates to the middle of the story because at the part when Ponyboy and Johnny visit Dally that shows that Dally was there for them, to protect them.
In the very end of the story the deciding rumble takes place. The greasers beat the Socs really bad. Therefore, the Socs leave the Greasers alone and the two gangs make up. While time fly’s, all the boys choose to stand by Jonnhy’s side, praying that he will make it out alive. Shortly after, sadly, Johnny passes away in the hospital, and Dally dies from being shot and chased by the cops.
In Ponyboy’s English class at school, he decides to write a story called ‘The Outsiders’
The mood at the end of this story is ‘sad’. It is sad because there are two deaths that take place of people who really cared about these people.
The theme I came up with relates to the end of the story because in the end when Johnny was in the hospital, Ponyboy and the other boys stood by his side the whole time.
In conclusion, one lesson you should always remember is that you should always be there for your friends and family throughout any situation. These examples I listed that were shown in the story explains why. Family and friends are important.
